LaToya Leader teaches children to Be a Leader by sharing what they are learning with others.

What does it mean?

  • Be a good role model by making healthy food and activity choices.
  • Be healthy by avoiding obesity-related diseases, such as certain cancers, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.
  • Be an advocate for a healthier community by supporting the following:
    • Healthy lunch menus, P.E. and recess time for children.
    • Farmer’s markets and whole food co-ops.
    • The creation of safe, outdoor spaces for people to enjoy.

Why is it important?

  • Adults and children set examples for one another through the food and activity choices they make. We are more likely to be healthy when others around us are healthy.
  • When young children are healthy and active, they have the building blocks for school success. You can learn more here.
  • Healthy individuals make healthy communities. You can learn more here.

How Can I Do It?

  • Encourage your family and friends to think before they eat and move every day!
  • Share healthy recipes that work for you and your family.
  • Learn if your weight is within the healthy range and encourage others to do so, as well, by going here.
  • Advocate for neighborhoods and communities to create spaces for movement and physical activities. You can learn more at the National Recreation and Park Association.
